The Graveyard Shift project has evolved from my becoming slightly obsessed of late with photographing graveyards and churchyards. Graves and cemeteries make intriguing images to say the least. One of my favorites is St. George’s churchyard at Portland, Dorset which has beautiful stone carvings. Then, a friend of mine found an old Churchyard; All Hallows in Wimborne St. Giles. It was very overgrown and yields broken gravestones in the shadows of the trees.
In 2014, I also visited Venice’s cemetery Island; the Isola di San Michele. This is a huge cemetery and has some wonderful stone carvings surrounding the more traditional graves. More recently, Tyne Cot cemetery in Passchendaele, Flanders; a very humbling experience.
